BENEFITS OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

  • Unlimited digital images within the session time alloted. With a 1 or 2 gig flash card I do not have to spend time reloading which reduces the chance of missing a candid moment.
  • You receive all hi-res images on a CD as opposed to film negatives, so you can make exact copies for family and friends.
  • The photographer can shoot and review the image and make adjustments on the spot if time allows which reduces the chance of not getting a correctly exposed image.
  • Unlike duplicated film negatives or slides, digital copies are an exact copy.
  • Digital has a greater dynamic range then film because it records more information in highlights and shadows).
  • Digital images have greater color fidelity, sharpness, and consistency.
I have been working with digital images for 12 years as a web/graphic designer, and I get calls from clients saying they have been told digital photos dont print as well or look as nice as film prints. This is not the case. Unless someone tries to print a digital file larger then its maximum resolution or perhaps the digital photographer chose an aperture/shutter speed/lighting that resulted in a bad digital image from the start—would not look good if printed in any case. There are many film photographers who can not afford to replace their film camera with a digital camera or they know little or nothing about computers, software, or digital photography and therefore have negative viewpoints instead of taking the time to educate themselves on the subject. Every image you see in magazines, CD covers, posters, etc., is a digital image. The image either originated as a digital image or as a film negative that was scanned and turned into a digital image. This process is the standard in the graphic design industry. When it comes to photography the most important thing is that the photographer takes a good digital image with enough details in the highlights, midtone, and shadows so that it will reproduce nicely when printed—This goes for both film and digital photography. I migrated to digital photography because I've discovered the many benefits digital has over film. Film still has some benefits, although as digital technology continues to advance, film will have very few benefits over digital.
